Care at Your Command: OrionStar Robots Build a New Model for Smart Elderly Care

Shanghai, China — By the end of last year, China’s elderly population aged 60 and above had surpassed 310 million, marking the country’s entry into a moderately aged society. As health awareness grows and expectations for quality of life increase, demand in elderly care is shifting from “basic support” to “emotional companionship.”

Yet the industry faces common challenges: caregivers are stretched thin, response efficiency is often limited, and seniors’ needs for rehabilitation and interaction are hard to meet. The State Council’s Opinions on Deeply Implementing the “AI+” Initiative has called for the “integration of AI with elderly care services,” setting a clear direction and encouraging institutions to explore practical applications.

Against this backdrop, a senior care institution in Shanghai’s Xuhui District has taken the lead in introducing OrionStar’s intelligent service robots. The initiative aims to improve responsiveness and human warmth in elderly care services, providing a replicable model of “AI + elderly care” for the industry.

Common Challenges in Elderly Care

  • Caregiver attention limitation: With many seniors to look after and daily tasks to manage, companionship needs are often overlooked.

  • Delayed response to health questions: Seniors facing issues such as medication or wellness guidance struggle to receive timely and accurate answers.

  • Restricted rehabilitation and interaction: Rehabilitation training and conversational or entertainment needs often rely on staff assistance, limiting seniors’ independence.

How OrionStar Robots Address These Needs

Instant response and companionship

With natural voice interaction, the robots ensure that whenever a senior speaks, there is a response. On average, the system now supports 612 conversations each month, filling companionship gaps and easing caregiver workload.

Real-time health consultation
The robots can flexibly answer questions using advanced models, while also supporting the upload of private institutional knowledge to become tailored health advisors. They provide timely responses to questions on medication or wellness and issue scheduled voice reminders for medication, reducing missed doses and improving accuracy.

Independent rehabilitation
Through voice commands, seniors can start rehabilitation training—such as finger exercises—at any time. A simple phrase like “do finger exercises” launches a guided video, with audio prompts helping residents maintain rhythm without requiring caregiver assistance.

Driving Smarter Elderly Care

By addressing companionship, consultation, and rehabilitation—three high-frequency needs—the OrionStar robots are helping to close service gaps, reduce caregiver pressure, and deliver more timely responses for seniors.

With both policy support and rising demand, the elderly care industry is entering a period of accelerated intelligent transformation. “AI+” is no longer just a policy goal but is being realized in practice, injecting new momentum into elderly care services and supporting the sector’s move toward higher-quality development.
